The Heavy Vehicle Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of goods or materials using large commercial vehicles. This role requires a deep understanding of driving regulations, vehicle maintenance, and road safety, as well as the ability to handle various types of heavy-duty vehicles. The Heavy Vehicle Driver will ensure that cargo is delivered on time and intact while adhering to company policies and regulatory standards. A successful candidate in this role is not only skilled at driving but also reliable, disciplined, and able to manage time effectively.

Key Responsibilities

Safe and Timely Transportation of Goods

• Transport goods and materials to designated locations, ensuring deliveries are made on schedule and following specified routes.
• Adhere strictly to road and traffic regulations to ensure safe driving practices at all times.
• Ensure proper loading and unloading of cargo, securing it in compliance with safety standards to prevent any damage during transit.

Vehicle Maintenance and Inspection

• Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle to check for mechanical issues, tire conditions, fuel levels, and fluid levels.
• Report any defects or issues to the maintenance team promptly, ensuring the vehicle remains in safe, operational condition.
• Perform basic vehicle maintenance tasks, such as checking oil levels, tire pressure, and replacing lights, when necessary.

Documentation and Compliance

• Maintain accurate records of driving hours, mileage, fuel consumption, and cargo details, as required by company policy and regulatory authorities.
• Ensure all necessary documentation, such as permits, licenses, and delivery forms, are in order and accessible during trips.
• Adhere to all company safety protocols, as well as local and national regulations governing heavy vehicle operation and freight transportation.

Customer Service and Communication

• Maintain clear communication with dispatchers, supervisors, and customers regarding delivery schedules and any unexpected delays.
• Exhibit professionalism and courtesy when interacting with customers, providing updates or assistance with cargo handling if needed.
• Promptly report any accidents, traffic violations, or delays to management to ensure issues are addressed efficiently.

Qualifications

• License: Valid heavy vehicle driver’s license and any other relevant permits required by local authorities.
• Experience: At least 3 years of experience driving heavy vehicles, with a clean driving record preferred.
• Skills: Strong knowledge of road safety practices, map reading, GPS navigation, and basic vehicle maintenance.
• Attributes: Responsible, punctual, and able to work independently, with the ability to manage time effectively and handle long working hours or overnight shifts if required.
